Division Within the Yazidi Community and the Need for Dialogue in Sinjar : An Interview with Haider Elias
As part of Dr. Saad Salloum s interview series with Yazidi elites on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the genocide, the following interview features Haider Elias, one of the most prominent international figures in the Yazidi community and the co-founder and former president of Yazda, a U.S.-based NGO, for ten years. Haider Elias lost his younger brother in the attack on the Yazidi community in August 2014. He then became actively involved in assisting victims and advocating to prevent future genocides against minorities. In December 2015, he co-founded Nadia’s Initiative and travelled worldwide to raise awareness of the Yazidi cause. This interview focuses on the future of the Yazidi community a decade after the genocide and the challenges of Yazidi-to-Yazidi dialogue in a community divided among conflicting political factions.
