With a PHD. in Public Administration from Cork University, Ireland, his research focused on the issue of modernity and the state in the Middle East. He has also taught Middle Eastern and Kurdish politics and Orientalism in the Department of Asian and Governmental Studies at the University of Cork.

Having worked with several think tanks in Germany, Sweden and Turkey, he is a contributor to the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Clingendael and is an author. He has also held a senior advisor position in the Iraqi Kurdish parliament. He writes in both Kurdish and English.

He is the author of a number of books in Kurdish. His areas of interest are: state and government, political economy, civil-military relations and great power politics.
