On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Yazidi genocide, we present this interview between Dr. Saad Salloum, Ibn Rushd Prize Laureate and Senior Researcher at the French Centre for Research on Iraq and one of the leading experts on minority issues in Iraq, and Nadia Murad, one of the most prominent advocates for survivors of genocide and sexual violence worldwide. Recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 and recent graduate of the American University in Washington, Mrs. Murad launched Nadia s Initiative (NI), a non-profit organisation which has achieved significant work both within and outside of Iraq.

Division Within the Yazidi Community and the Need for Dialogue in Sinjar : An Interview with Haider Elias

As part of Dr. Saad Salloum s interview series with Yazidi elites on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the genocide, the following interview features Haider Elias, one of the most prominent international figures in the Yazidi community and the co-founder and former president of Yazda, a U.S.-based NGO, for ten years. Haider Elias lost his younger brother in the attack on the Yazidi community in August 2014. He then became actively involved in assisting victims and advocating to prevent future genocides against minorities. In December 2015, he co-founded Nadia’s Initiative and travelled worldwide to raise awareness of the Yazidi cause. This interview focuses on the future of the Yazidi community a decade after the genocide and the challenges of Yazidi-to-Yazidi dialogue in a community divided among conflicting political factions.

Hasso Hurmi stands as a leading Yazidi scholar in the field of genocide studies, having authored ten comprehensive volumes covering various aspects of the genocide. He is the founder of the International Yazidis Foundation for the Prevention of Genocide (IYFPG), the first Yazidi organisation to receive special consultative status with the United Nations. Additionally, he contributed to the drafting of a national strategy to combat genocide in Iraq and helped launch the Geneva International Coalition for the Prevention of Genocide.
