As part of its research and analysis on geopolitical transformations in the Middle East, the European Institute for Studies on the Middle East and North Africa (EISMENA) has sent Lyna Ouandjeli, the Institute’s Head of Research, to Lebanon for a week-long field research mission from October 22-29, 2026.
This mission seeks to gain a first-hand understanding of the profound political, security, economic and social changes the country is undergoing, grounded in local realities.
Several major issues are central to this work: the war between Israel and Hezbollah and its consequences for Lebanon’s internal balance of power; living conditions for a population facing war and uncertainty; large-scale displacement and its humanitarian repercussions; deepening economic and institutional vulnerabilities; and Lebanon’s future prospects in a Middle East undergoing significant change.
Through this mission, EISMENA reaffirms its commitment to research grounded in direct observation, dialogue with local actors and in-depth analysis of developments on the ground, with the aim of better understanding ongoing transformations and their regional implications.
The findings of this mission will form the basis of a series of articles and analyses to be published soon on the Institute’s website. These publications will offer an in-depth examination of each issue studied, placing local realities, first-hand accounts and the perspectives of local actors at the centre of the analysis.
